I have been away for the past few days at an Insights Discovery business event that certainly raised new thoughts into the way I work. It was an event at which I was speaking too – where I was sharing my experience of my journey to accreditation in Insights Deeper Discovery. For those who follow my blog articles there may be a faint recollection of my time back in Switzerland when I was at the inaugural development event.
I have finished my studies and now fully licensed to run events which focus on individual development, management development and leadership development. As so often happens when preparing for something (in this case my speech) it is interesting to reflect on what we have gained in our studies and subsequent practice. Frequently forgetting rich material that we now take for granted that other have yet to experience. Frequently losing sight of things as it has sunk beneath the surface.
The picture that you see struck me as rather impactful too. This is the horse racing course in Worcester next to the River Severn, the longest river in the United Kingdom, which floods occasionally. On this occasion it has flooded in spectacular fashion and what you can see is the final straight with the finishing post clearly visible.
So whilst the scene may look picturesque it made me consider a range of issues. This may be because I had been think things through in a different way, still fresh from the event, and the impact of having time ‘out’ that so often makes us think in a different way until we have been nudged back into the mainstream by the pressures of daily activities. Perhaps some of my questions are useful to ask about yourself and your business:
- Does anything look good in your business but beneath the surface there are things that are amiss?
- Is anything that you offer no longer visible as it has become lost below the surface of your usual offering?
- Have you got your own ‘flood’ where all may seem calm but someone may feel ‘swamped’?
- If you are not ‘swamped’ yet, how good are your personal ‘flood defences’?
There are many more questions that sprung to my mind, perhaps there are more that you can think of for your own situation. It should be worth investing a few minutes over a coffee to think this through – the outcome will probably be better than a bet on the next horse. And instead of it being a finishing post for you, it may become the winning post.
The choice is yours……
My best wishes,
Peter
