By Peter Johnson, on May 25th, 2012 | Comments are closed We all know of the value of a good lighthouse. And no more so than someone who has been brought up with the sea. It provides a beam of light that can reach the horizon on a clear day or night – with its unique timing and interval that references which lighthouse it is. Also on a misty day it will bark out it’s noise into the grey blanket that hangs over the sea which hides the perils in the water.
On a delightful sunny and calm day the lighthouses look so attractive and seem so peaceful. Yet on a stormy day the force of the sea is amazing and can be hugely destructive. That is why

By Peter Johnson, on May 18th, 2012 | Comments are closed Over the past few weeks I have been wrestling with something that has been challenging my mind. It is all very positive and whilst imperfect action is usually better than taking too much time for perfect action, I need to make sure what I do is good both for my client and for myself satisfaction.
One of the great thinkers of fiction is Sherlock Holmes. The legendary detective who could solve mysteries, often criminal, where others failed. Now I am not saying my ‘issue’ is of a criminal nature!! Far from it. But, it did make me recognise that sometimes it is wise to take time for some good thinking.
Too often in our world we are

By Peter Johnson, on May 9th, 2012 | Comments are closed Here in the United Kingdom we have just undergone our local elections. These also included the election for the new Lord Mayor of London. When I went to vote there had been few people at the local polling station and the people in attendance were not expecting a very busy day. One of the things that a true democracy does embrace is the feeling that we live in a free country. A country where we can influence change, can make our voice heard, can make a stand against something that does not accord with our wishes.
In past years this is something that many countries around the world have managed to attain. One remembers the people who

By Peter Johnson, on May 2nd, 2012 | Comments are closed I was walking across Trafalgar Square recently and there were very few pigeons to be seen. One of the things this square is famous for is its pigeons and on many historical photographs you will see hundreds of these birds.
So where had they gone? Well I noticed the other side of the square there was a very good reason why they were not there – a hawk! Pigeons are not happy with hawks as they are often on their menu. I recognised the bird as a Harris Hawk, and was interested in what was going on so spoke to the person holding this wonderful looking bird. Apparently he was commissioned to walk around the square with

By Peter Johnson, on April 30th, 2012 | Comments are closed I love Insights Discovery! It is such a brilliant profiling tool to help people make a major step in their own development, their team development and enhance the performance of their business too.
I have recently been working with some new clients and it is brilliant to see the way they adopt the insights they gain into the own management development. It helps them create an ‘edge’ in what they do that can help with their competitive advantage.
One of my roles is the marking of the paper that aspirational licensed practitioners must complete, and pass, before they can practice and provide profiles. It is so inspiring marking papers when they have ‘got it’. I can sense

I was in Birmingham, England the last week being interviewed as a finalist for the Director of the Year Award – I am honoured to be on the shortlist and the process was run in a delightful and professional way with me being quizzed by five eminent business people. On the way there I passed the statute that you can see in the picture. One I have often seen over the years on my trips in and out of Birmingham, where I worked for a time.
I have always found the city and people delightful with many aspects not fully appreciated.
Did you know it has more canals than

By Peter Johnson, on March 29th, 2012 | Comments are closed I was up in Scotland a few days ago attending meetings, taking time to catch up with friends and also see some of the scenery. Sadly for the first few days the weather was not at its’ best although this did not stop me enjoying my time. On the way home I took some time out and stayed overnight in a remote spot.
I arrived in the dark on a windy and rain swept night and was only too pleased to enjoy a hot bath and a welcome drink in front of a roaring log fire – just wonderful. Made all the more pleasant by a delightful young couple who were great company and very interesting to

After many years of developing ourselves either for a sport, a hobby or for our work we are sometimes challenged to see if we can win. This may be in a race, a competition, or in the examination room.
I well remember all of the occasions just mentioned. As a keen sports person there is many a race I have won and felt the rush of joy by reaching the finishing tape first, the victory of the competition just won, even the satisfaction of working hard for an examination and feeling a glow when I know I can answer all of the questions that challenge my knowledge.
Like many though, I have also felt the disappointment

I was walking a few days ago with a friend on a wonderful crisp late winters day. The sky was bright but full of white cloud and the temperature hovering around freezing – so a good stiff walk kept us warm and encouraged us to keep on the move. We set out to walk about 20km in beautiful scenery and one of the interesting points of our walk was the small village of Avebury in Wiltshire, England.
Many people will have heard of Stonehenge but far fewer have heard about the stone circle of which you see a small part in the picture. The circle is so large that it embraces a large part of the

I am running an event soon that is targeted at business owners or key decsion makers in businesses in the Worcestershire area of England.
One of the things that I have noticed and is well proven in research is that the people who keep their knowledge growing are the ones who are most resilient in developing a successful business. One of the problems of being a business owner is that sometimes it can be very lonely at the top – there are things that you feel unable to discuss with people in the business and also sometimes there are things that you do not wish to take home to discuss. So where do you go?
Well,
