Who designed your laptop?

Bill Moggridge died in September 2012. This was not a name I recognized when I spotted the article mentioning this sad occasion, all the more sad as he was born in 1943, so not an old man.

He died in San Francisco, USA having lived in California for the past 30 years.

Bill Moggeridge was an English designer and the man responsible for the design of the first laptop computer. This was launched in the early 1980s. There had been other portable computers developed but it was the ‘clamshell’ design that he created where the screen folds over the keyboard. If one looks in any café, on the train, offices and homes we will all see people

A child, parent or adult attitude to your development

I was running a small private event using Insights Deeper Discovery recently and delighted with the group I was working with. All people were keen to develop themselves, all people were self employed, and all people had chosen to invest in their own development. For people who are self employed the cost of the day has a double hit – there is the cost of the event plus the opportunity cost of their time – they could be earning a fee elsewhere.

The colourful mat you see in this picture is the one I use, but sadly on this occasion not in such a scenic setting! It was a British winter with snow outside, but thought this

Cargo or crew?

Some years ago I heard the term ‘are you cargo or crew’. It is clear what this means – are you working or being carried.

I was with a client recently where we are working one:one. They are really keen on their own development. They want to make the business they head so much more effective, and a better place to work. They have done their own Insights Discovery Profile and are very self-aware. The impact this is having on their direct team is clear to see. The intention is to complete Insights Discovery for the whole management team in the near future.

Why, well I asked the simple question ‘who is cargo and who is crew?’

What’s age got to do with it?

On 19 April 2013, it was the birthday of the oldest known living person in the world. He is Japanese and 116.

In spite of the freeing of legal restraints and the economic downturn most people are looking to retire from work in their 60s. If we can live another 50 years beyond our ‘normal’ retirement age perhaps we need to think anew as we will spend more time in retirement than in work.

This really got me thinking!

I have mentioned before that I am accredited in Insights Deeper Discovery and I have been reviewing the way this exciting, and in my opinion, life changing work can be integrated more fully with the clients I work

What is the right attitude?

There is a lot of criticism of the youth of today. Well, I am here to put the record straight. If you wish to believe the fiction so often written elsewhere you can stop now. If you wish to read some inspirational truth read on….

I specialise in individual, team and business development. I write, speak and publish. I am a mentor of Insights Discovery and the worlds first accredited Insights Deeper Discovery practitioner. A Director of the Year award winner. I mention this as I am really proud of the opportunities I have been given. It also means I meet some really successful people, some are clients.

I generally work with adults, but quite recently I

Do you get your big rocks in first?

I met with a client last week and we were discussing the fast pace of life that we all seem to lead. It is clear it is not going to slow up anytime yet! Indeed, with all of the ways we have of communicating with each other in a consistent, and at times, persistent way, it is set to get more demanding. If we let it, our time can be spent reacting to others and keeping the hungry mouth of communication fed.

This got us onto thinking about prioritisation and what is important. Too often we find ourselves busy with the small things and end up not having time for the bigger issues.

This led onto a

How many people walked on the moon?

I was at a delightful dinner a short while ago and the conversation was as good as the wonderful food. We were discussing achievements and a range of other linked topics when an old question popped into my mind. I think partially stimulated by this picture I took of the moon only a few days before.

How many people had walked on the moon? Well, the answer is 12, and after a light challenge regarding the accuracy of my number, I did return home and check my facts. The answer is correct.

The follow-on question was how many were Boy Scouts? Again I had a light challenge regarding the answer – which is 11. I also checked

Are you putting in the fuel first?

I was in the Cotswolds, England, today and whilst dry, it was bone bitingly cold. The sky was a steely bright grey casting a light that had no warmth. A delightful day certainly, but everyone seemed wrapped up against the early morning chill and busy running their errands.

I had been up early and well in front of my time plan. I had already collected the groceries I needed for a lunch I was giving, so a hot coffee had a significant attraction.

Although still early, I called into one of my favourite coffee shops. Other than a couple of ladies chatting away, and waiting for a friend, the place was quiet. There was a roaring

When was the last time you laughed?

I was listening to something which mentioned that human beings are the only creature that have the ability to laugh. I am not sure that this is true but it did make me smile. The remark that then followed really did make me laugh. That was that human beings are probably the only creatures who have enough problems for the need to laugh.

This got me thinking about the pressures that we seem to have in our lives. As the world seems to spin at an ever increasing speed, many of us seem to have less time to focus on things to same depth we many well have done in the past. When the joys of childhood,

The Hive in Worcester – are you getting noticed too?

The picture you see is The Hive in Worcester, England. It is a building that has caused some local controversy due to the design – some people love it whilst others are less convinced.

One thing that is clear, the concept is ‘different’.

The building houses the first combined university and public library in Europe. Another achievement has been the recognition of the design and it is on the list of potential buildings being considered for an architectural award. Like it or not, it has been noticed.

As I was walking past the building, I stopped and took this picture. It is from the far side of the river and it got me thinking.

A few questions
