Hi there,
This probably sounds like a blindingly obvious statement to most people, especially with the stream of news that assails us at every opportunity. It is also one which you have seen before. Indeed, I have recounted it from a conversation I recently overheard. It is also something seen in articles from a range of sources including newspapers, magazines or heard from the radio, conversations, television. So what are you doing to make it an interesting year for you in your business world and perhaps more importantly to ensure it is a positive and interesting year that lies before you?
I have been speaking with a number of my clients over the past few days and the one common theme is the enthusiasm to invest in some very focused development. There is a clear view that the world of business is still on its continual journey of change. Just like a river, unless it dries up, there is always a flow that keeps moving – at times a pleasure and at other times possibly a threat. The challenge now seems to be how to get the right development that will suit specific individuals or specific groups of people across the business. The readymade off the peg offering has never fitted well and increasingly high performers look to bespoke what they need, only utilizing the preprepared option in harmony with their overarching objective.
I am heartened by this on two fronts – firstly that there is a clear acknowledgement that development is needed and secondly, perhaps more importantly it is seen wanted and valued. Yes, this is a slight play on words although a massively cruicial one.
The other interesting theme that is emerging is that these are businesses and people who are currently high performers. Selection and survival of the fittest has always been one of the laws of nature, so the fit are keen to keep fit. During 2009 I know of businesses and people who have had a tough time and we all are aware of some businesses that are no longer with us. Some had failed to invest in that continual journey of development. So my questions for you to consider are:
- What development do you need to keep fresh and focused?
- What development do people in your business or team need so they can retain that focus compared with the competition?
- Are you looking to reduce the amount you invest in development? And if the answer is yes, consider these questions as well:
- What will be the impact on your overall strength?
- What impact will this have on your competitive edge?
- Is no investment wise?
- For any development you are considering have you got the focus to make it really count, with the people who will make a difference?
- Do you see development as a ‘course and a cost’ or a valuable investment?
I hope these questions give you focus in your development direction and decisions. And finally, are you and your people proactive in ensuring there is a continued flow of development? The answer to that question really does tell you who is stepping up to the plate!
If you think I may be able to help – just ask. I will tell you if I can, I will also tell if I cannot.
My good wishes to your development.
Peter
