Goals For Our New Year

Happy New Year!

Today in Worcester, England, where I live it was a perfect winter day. Fresh crisp air, a lovely blue sky and a perfect day to clear the mind. So with thoughts of what the year ahead could hold in store I decided to have a good walk and look at things with renewed enthusiasm.

1 Jan 2010

I chose to walk along the banks of the River Severn in Worcester(the Severn is the longest river in Britain). Such a delight and lovely to see so many people enjoying being outside and enjoying the company of those they were with. I always love seeing the children feeding the ducks and swans – what a picture the whole scene makes, especially when some stray seagulls also join in the spectacle.

I have walked along the path at the rear of Worcester Cathedral many times and I am always in awe of the sheer beauty of the building as it nestles close to the river and exudes the warmth from its sandstone structure. A structure that has been there for around 1000 years. It has been a site for worship for nearly 2000 years, but that is another story. After taking a few pictures, one of which you can see, it got me thinking about my new year resolutions, or, as I will call them, goals.

Many of us do start the year with good intent having spent some time (varying from a few moments to many hours) thinking about what the year ahead could mean for us. All too often those good intentions fall by the wayside, perhaps to be reconsidered at the start of the next year, or perhaps to be forgotten.

Now this leads me to thinking about the Cathedral and our goals. The one thing that they both have in common is good foundations.

So as we start this new year are your goals being built on good foundations? Are they being built in good faith for those who they will impact upon? And are they being built in such a way that you will stand strong and proud in your determination to make those goals happen in the year ahead? I do hope so.

To your successes in 2010.

Peter
