Food for thought….

I was having coffee with my sister-in-law the other day, at a delightful café which we occasionally use. We sat outside as we wanted to watch the world go by while we chatted, even though it was quite cool. It was mid morning and I had eaten an early breakfast so I ordered a bacon sandwich with my coffee. I’ve had bacon sandwiches at a wide variety of places ranging from simple cafés, to decent hotels. Many good, some indifferent and the occasional one very poor. Today’s was exceptional, certainly one of the best I have ever had. So much so that after checking that it wasn’t only the appearance that was good – a large bite

Have you taken stock recently?

I was proud to be one of the finalists at the Director of the Year Awards 2011, run by the Institute of Directors, on Thursday evening.

It was a delight to be in the company of 250 keen business people all working to deliver excellence for their organizations. There was a buzz in the room and great conversation. It is always wonderful to discover what other people do in their work – the sheer range and diversity never ceases to inspire me.

Some large organizations, some very small, some well established, some quite new. Isn’t it just fantastic what people do?

In the UK our tax year ends on 5 April and for this reason many organizations

Spending more on coffee than your own development…..?

FACT: Most people spend more on their daily coffee than they invest in their own development.

I have met many people who hold management positions who have never attended a single day of management development training – ever. These are people who have been appointed to manage others and deliver results for their organization. Now I find this interesting. I also find it shocking. I wonder if we would trust other people who have never been trained for their role. People such as the plumber fixing our gas boiler, the person who maintains our car and perhaps replaces the brake pads, our dentist. There is an expectation that as we move through our career management skills appear

Are you always present with your clients?

It has been a wonderful day with brilliant sunshine and generally people feeling very uplifted. One of the beauties of the British Isles is that we have some wonderful weather albeit to listen to the average conversation anyone would think otherwise. I love the changing seasons, the relative unpredictability of it all and the fact that as the year unfolds so does the changing scenery, type of clothes we wear, the food we eat, the drinks we drink. Yes, there are some events that cause pain and problems but compared with other parts of the world we are very fortunate. Now this is not a ramble about the weather – a subject always on the tongues of

The ‘big top’

I am sorry I have not been at my blog of late. I always enjoy writing my articles as it usually means something has caught my attention. Well, life has been very busy of late with client work, enjoying the wonderful spring weather and a series of meetings. Rather an interesting follow-on from my blog on ‘work life blend’.

The other day I was out walking and noticed that a circus had arrived in town and the colourful ‘big top’ had already been erected. It got me thinking about the fun and pleasure that circuses provide to the many people who go to see what amazing antics the performers get up to. It also got me thinking

Are you keeping your head up?

For those of you who have been following my blog you will have noticed a trend which entails walking. Something I love for many reasons, something I have been doing for many more years than I care to remember.

A key part of serious hill walking is having great footwear, and over the years I have worn out many boots. They become a trusted old friend and when it comes time to get a new pair, there are mixed feelings. The thought of pensioning off a reliable companion is always a concern. Also, as technology has usually moved forward, there will be new products on the market which is always interesting. In my time I have seen

An interesting year lies ahead….

Hi there,

This probably sounds like a blindingly obvious statement to most people, especially with the stream of news that assails us at every opportunity. It is also one which you have seen before. Indeed, I have recounted it from a conversation I recently overheard. It is also something seen in articles from a range of sources including newspapers, magazines or heard from the radio, conversations, television. So what are you doing to make it an interesting year for you in your business world and perhaps more importantly to ensure it is a positive and interesting year that lies before you?

I have been speaking with a number of my clients over the past few days and
